During an election discussion on TV yesterday evening, someone suggested that employers should allow their employees time off to enjoy the 2010 World Cup football matches involving the Dutch team. This received a round of applause from those who were no doubt football-loving employees, but when an employer stood up and commented, ‘Unpaid, of course’ the applause gave way to boos. The politicians sat smiling, obviously enjoying a respite from heated discussions of more important issues.
Politicians here, fighting to run the country after the upcoming election on June 9th, are primarily involved in finding more ways to rob the people financially and socially in order to reduce increasing national debts incurred by irresponsible government spending in the first place, and a lack of government control of unscrupulous bankers fritting away investors’ money on high-risk adventures.
People are becoming increasingly weary of government wastefulness, of seeing their hard-earned cash continuing to disappear into black holes such as empire building wars, bank bailouts and foreign aid programs that do nothing but pour money into the pockets of corrupt leaders.
The European Union (EU) is reaching dangerous levels of instability as its “wealthier” member nations, themselves reeling under excessive national debts, agree to bail out others nearing bankruptcy with little hope of recovery and even less of being able to pay back “loans”. Central banks are still printing huge amounts of cash in an effort to stimulate economic growth when all it really does is stimulate inflation. When one realises that an unelected elite, the European Commission, now effectively runs the EU, one might questions where its allegiance lies.
More and more people are waking up to the ongoing worldwide breakdown of national sovereignty by the elite and their bought government leaders, forcing nations to become poorer in order to foot the bill for their proposed world government. To this end, the introduction of a worldwide carbon tax (cap-and-trade) is still high on their agenda even though it is based on the now proven myth of man-made global warming and will destroy economies and lead to increased government control. Of course, there is a real risk that this will all backfire and bring about a worldwide financial collapse that will ultimately benefit no one.
Many would welcome a democratic world government run on the lines of a republic, where all are free to lead their own life and the government’s only roll is to protect this freedom. However, considering the above and the way governments worldwide continue to reduce civil liberties in the name of fighting “dissenters” at home and abroad, Utopia would seem to be as far away as ever.
I ‘m a fan of football/soccer but I always say that football is a sort of opium to the people and big money for FIFA and governments .
the forthcoming world cup finals is a favoiurable time to pass laws against people’s wills cos peoples’ eyes will be riveted on TVs .you’ve tackled an important issue Jan.well done.
Thanks. As many now realize, media entertainment can be used to manipulate the masses. Team sports divide them into factions – them and us – cementing psychologically the idea of an “enemy” to be defeated.
